PZS Architects was commissioned to design a new hospital for a Fear-Free Certified veterinary team in Rockaway, New Jersey. The vision was clear: to create a warm, welcoming destination that supports both exceptional medical care and a calming experience for pets and their families.

The design of Rockaway Animal Hospital blends natural stone and authentic wood siding with expansive glazing and carefully detailed metallic panels, balancing a modern expression with a sense of familiarity. The architecture conveys an appreciation for authenticity while looking confidently toward the future.

Inside, natural materials and a warm, cohesive color palette reinforce a sense of comfort and ease. The waiting area is filled with abundant natural light and offers views of arriving pets, helping to ease the anxiety of canine and feline companions. Every aspect of the visit has been thoughtfully choreographed from a pet’s perspective, aligning with the principles of Fear-Free care.

Beyond the spacious waiting areas—separated for cats and dogs to minimize stress—the hospital features a comprehensive, state-of-the-art veterinary emergency and treatment facility. Clinical spaces include operating suites, exam rooms, endoscopy and ultrasound rooms, in-house laboratory services, CT imaging, and an isolated oncology unit. Centralized medical gas storage supports an efficient building systems strategy, reinforcing operational clarity and performance. Administrative offices are positioned along the perimeter to maximize access to natural light, supporting the well-being and productivity of doctors and staff alike.
