This award recognizes projects that have demonstrated the highest level of modern craftsmanship—including exceptional care in detail, utilization of new or alternative materials and technologies, and/or the coordination of intricate building techniques. Turner Construction Co. is the contractor for this project. PZS Architects, In association with Robert A.M. Stern Architects, designed this world-class residential condominium tower on the prestigious Rittenhouse Square in Philadelphia.
The Salvation Army KROC Center was awarded the GBCA Construction Excellence Award Honorable Mention. The Awards for Construction Excellence recognize firms that have excelled in construction projects throughout the region. PZS Architects, in association with MGA Partners, designed this 130,000 square foot regional community center. PZS focused on the public recreation amenities: an aquatic center, gymnasium, and a fitness facility with locker rooms.
PZS Architects designed a new Education and Training Center for Congreso de Latinos Unidos, which was named the 14th largest Latino organization in the nation by Hispanic Business. On Friday, September 16, Congreso de Latinos Unidos, celebrated the groundbreaking ceremony for its third building on its North American Street campus. This new building, a 57,000 square-foot, three-story space, will house Pan American Academy Charter School and Harcum College at Congreso, educational components of the agency’s cradle to career pipeline of services.
Scheduled to open in the Summer of 2012, the site will house more than 700 K-8 students through Pan American Academy Charter School, which was founded by Congreso, as well as up to 300 adult students pursuing their Associate’s Degrees through Harcum College at Congreso. The space will also host some of Congreso’s community and social support services.
Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter spoke at the event and placed an emphasis on the positive impact that well-educated students has on their future abilities to compete in the workforce.
PZS Architects designed a new 116,500 SF Student Residence Hall for Saint Joseph’s University. The May 9th , Ground Breaking Ceremony marked the beginning of construction of this new, 413-bed freshmen residence hall at the corner of Cardinal and City Avenues.
The Villiger Residence Hall construction is the most comprehensive residential project on the campus since the construction of the City Avenue Apartments in 2004. Scheduled for completion by the Fall 2012 semester, the residence hall will provide an attractive housing option for first-year students. The mid-rise building will feature a tower element visible from City Avenue and include generous living, social and study spaces.
The focus is on fostering a sense of community among students. Each wing will have study lounges for individual and group learning and social activities. Additionally, on every floor between the two wings, there will be a large social lounge to provide a shared common space. The ground floor will a feature a large Fitness Center, Laundry facilities, a shared kitchen, and 2 guest rooms.
PZS Architects is providing design services for the Bakers Square retail complex which will be built in Philadelphia’s Hunting Park West neighborhood. Bakers Square is an integral component of the Philadelphia City Planning Commission’s program for the Revitalization of Hunting Park West. The Bakers Square shopping center, located at West Hunting Park Avenue & Fox Streets broke ground on March 25, 2011. Mayor Michael Nutter addressed an excited crowd Friday. Also, in attendance was State Senator, Vincent Hughes; Jeffrey Brown, Brown’s Super Stores’ President and CEO; and, of course PZS’ Principal- in-Charge on the Bakers Square project, David Polatnick, AIA (pictured on far right).
The center will consist of approximately 220,000 square feet of retail, office, educational and institutional spaces. Bakers Square is centrally located at the site of the former headquarters of the Tastykake Baking Company with excellent access to I-76, Rte. 1 & Rte. 13. It is in close proximity to Chestnut Hill, East Falls, South Germantown, Allegheny West, Tioga and Manayunk. The 30-acre center will be anchored by a ShopRite supermarket and for the first time in more than 20 years, residents from the Nicetown-Tioga area of Philadelphia will have a supermarket in the neighborhood. The project will also bring a significant number of new jobs to the area, many of which to be filled by area residents.
PZS founding Partner, Mario Zacharjasz joins the Woman One Award Committee for Drexel’s Institute for Woman’s Health and Leadership
As a committee member for the Woman One Award, Mario is involved in fundraising efforts for the Woman One Award and Scholarship Fund, where proceeds provide scholarships to deserving women committed to becoming physicians and practicing medicine in underserved communities. In addition to providing scholarships for talented, under-represented minority women, the Woman One Award annually honors a woman of outstanding leadership. This year’s honoree, Sara Manzano-Diaz has been dedicated to empowering women with a distinguished record of public service. She is now the Director of the Women’s Bureau of the U.S. Department of Labor. The award ceremony and reception will be held on April 25, 2011 at the Rittenhouse hotel.

PZS Sponsors the Congreso de Latinos and the Congreso Society’s Fifth Annual Gala Latina ‘Chilin’ in Chile’
The 2011 Fifth Annual Gala Latina, held on March 19th at the Hyatt at the Bellevue in Philadelphia, delivered on its tradition of bringing together supporters of the Latino community in the Greater Philadelphia Region. The gala featured dance lessons, a wine tasting, a cocktail reception, live entertainment, dinner, a dance party, and even a raffle. PZS’ founding partner, Mario Zacharjasz attended the event, as he has for the past 5 years. Mario has long supported the Congreso de Latinos and its commitment to strengthen Philadelphia Latino communities through social, economic, education and health services, leadership development, and advocacy.
